Animal Interests

Here you will find some areas of my interest in animals.

I decided that, in being given the opportunity to be in a position where (sometimes) people listen to me,
I wanted to use that status to be helpful.  My main charities are those of  animal rescue and welfare.
It breaks my heart to see so many innocent animals abandoned, neglected and sometimes horribly abused
by humans.  So I try to help spread the word for organizations that rescue animals from tragic situations and bring them to loving new homes.

From Poison's Rikki Rockett:

I will be speaking at this year's "Puppy Mill Awareness Day" in Lancaster, PA on the 16th of Sept.

I invite anyone in the greater Central PA area to attend and support this very important event.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PUPPY MILL AWARENESS DAY IN LANCASTER, PA

(Intercourse Community Park, 3529 Old Philadelphia Pike, Leacock Township, PA) -- Adopt A Pet and Last Chance for Animals (LCA) are proud to announce their annual Puppy Mill Awareness Day on Saturday, September 16, 2006 (rain or shine) from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. The purpose of Awareness Day is to educate the public about the horrors of Puppy Mills in Pennsylvania, and to educate the consumer regarding the connection between pet stores and puppy mills.

Adopt A Pet and LCA are serious about calling for the state of Pennsylvania to prohibit approval of new puppy mills, to adequately monitor operation of existing puppy mills and to promptly close down mills not in compliance with Federal and State Laws. Puppy mills are breeding facilities that mass produce purebred puppies, and have become a booming business in recent years at the expense of the animals themselves. A puppy miller's objective is to maximize profits by reducing costs, thus keeping dogs in cages and pens their entire lives, adults used for breeding only, with puppies sold to pet stores across the country. The puppies' parents are unsocialized, live in filthy conditions, crate on top of crate, with food (just enough to keep them alive), excrement and urine flowing down from one onto the other, little to no medical attention, and are then sold at markets or disposed of otherwise. The puppies of these unhealthy parents are sold to pet stores (who often deny that their pups are from millers) are often very sick themselves, costing the consumer thousands of dollars in veterinary expenses, not to mention the heartache. Purchasing a pet from a pet store supports the puppy millers who are also very clever in selling their "cute" puppies on the internet and in newspaper ads.

On Friday night, September 15, at 8:30 p.m. there will be a candlelight vigil at Rockvale Outlets where we will pray and hold our candles for the dogs who have suffered and died at the cruel hands of the millers and prayers for those that are suffering now.

On Saturday, September 16, Awareness Day will have a host of speakers from all facets of the animal community such as Chris DeRose of LCA, Tammy Grimes of Dogs Deserve Better, Rikki Rockett and more. Pet Chaplain Dottie Johns will be on hand during the day to do individual blessings for people who bring their pets to the Park. There will be a Walking Tour of Intercourse starting at 12:00 p.m. Please bring your dog for this walk and carry bottled water for you and your dog. There will be 25 or more animal rescue groups to visit with and more. Bring your coolers (there will be no food or beverages sold), bring your dogs, and come have a wonderful picnic with your pet and other animal lovers and help raise awareness of the horrors of the puppy mill dogs.

Adopt A Pet and LCA anticipate an enormous turnout for this event and invite the public to attend. There will NOT be on-site adoptions. Please visit www.awarenessday.org for further information. Rescues and vendors must register in advance if they wish to have a table. AWARENESS DAY 2006 IS COMING!!!

Please help to stop
Chinese Dog Murders!

A horrendous thing is happening in China, where the government and their lackeys are senselessly,
inhumanely murdering innocent dogs!  These poor animals are clubbed in the streets while their guardians
look on, unwilling to help, and if they are not painfully beaten to death, they face death by poisoning,
electrocution, hanging and other unthinkable methods.

You might think, that's a world away and doesn't have anything to do with me, but let me ask you this.
What if it were your cherished pet that this was happening to? The Chinese have long been known for
their cruel and inhumane ways of treating not only animals, but humans also, and the only way things
like this will end is if you step up to the plate and let them know this type of action is not acceptable!

The whole reason dogs are being slaughtered in China has to do with the fear of catching rabies.
Rather than vaccinate animals and help all to live a healthy and happy life, these savage people think the
answer is to indiscriminately kill any animal in their path.  The Humane Society has offered to donate
money to the Chinese in order to help with the vaccinations, but still the killings are planned.

PETA is stepping in to help, and you can be a part of their effort.  They are gathering petitions and
letters protesting the planned additional murders and will be presenting these requests to the Chinese
government.  Please help them by clicking here and letting your thoughts be heard.

Please help the dogs in China, and speak for them where they cannot speak.  Your voice counts.
Other ways you can help are by contacting your federal, state and local government officials and
demanding they deal with this issue, boycotting products made in China, and by letting your local
Chinese Consulate know that you do not condone their way of dealing with this issue.

Advice centre - Protect your pet this summer (courtesy of the RSPCA)
With the exceptional heat of the summer, I thought it'd be a good thing to remind people
about leaving their animals in the car. I had actually accosted someone leaving their
dog in a hot car wearing a SWEATER!
  • Remember:
  • On a warm day the temperature inside a car can quickly soar to 49°C/120°F or even higher
  • If an animal in a car is panting for breath it may be on its way to suffering heatstroke
  • Heatstroke can kill an animal very quickly
  • Even if you park your car in the shade, the position of the sun will change
  • Leaving windows open or putting a bowl of water in the car does not help
  • If a dog becomes overheated, give it a shower immediately or bathe it in cool water.
Call a vet as soon as possible, as once the dog goes into shock and loses consciousness
    it may be too late
  • Owners who put animals at risk in this way could face prosecution

Dear Friends:

I have been at the hurricane in New Orleans for over two weeks. In this time I have organized search and rescue teams and food and water teams (for the animals on the streets). I have personally pulled hundreds of animals from roof tops, attics and houses. It has been amazing to me that these animals are still alive. I got a dog off a roof a few days ago who should have weighed 90 pounds but was down to 40 pounds from being stuck on that roof with no food and water. These animals want to live and are showing us this everyday.

Here is the problem. We still have 3,000 addresses of homes where animals are trapped. These are addresses where people have called either HSUS or LASPCA  and asked for us to rescue their animals. I know that there are thousands of other  homes where animals are trapped that no one called about. I know this b/c I have rescued hundreds of animals from homes after hearing barking that were not on our lists. CONSIDER THIS: Amazingly we are finding that half of the homes we get into have animals still alive. With a MINIMUM of 3,000 addresses that is at least 1500 animals who are waiting behind closed doors for a loving hand to rescue them. With the current teams we have now we can only get into approximately 300 homes each day. The animals will NEVER be alive if we continue at this rate. I am begging each and everyone of you to get to New Orleans to help.

It does not take a "certified disaster rescuer" to break into a house and at last
provide fresh food and water (to sustain that animal until someone qualified can get them out). We only have a week at most to save some of these desperate animals. Please do your part...we are all the animals have.

Cougar Slaughter Planned!  A massive statewide slaughter of cougars (a.k.a. mountain lions) is currently being planned in Oregon under the guise of "management." The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s "Cougar Management Plan" is on the fast track with public hearings held throughout the state during August only. Your voice is needed now!

TAKE ACTION! Three things you can do TODAY to voice your opposition to this unconscionable and scientifically indefensible plan:

1.  Speak out today by attending any of the public hearings being held;

2.  Submit comments to ODFW opposing the plan;

3.  Call Governor Ted Kulongoski:
